By following the instruction of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), we have adopted five steps learning teaching methodology for foundational stage (3 to 8 years aged children). Teachers will learn to teach through “Panchaadi” i.e., five-step learning. The five steps of learning are initiation, realization, practice, experimentation, and dissemination. Under the new education policy, a module of five-step learning has been prepared. — “Panchaadi”
As a first step, the teacher establishes a connection with the child by introducing the new concept / topic with what the child already knows. Then, the children learn more about the new topic by asking questions, exploring, and trying out different ideas and things with the teacher's help.
In the second step, children try to understand core concepts through play, enquiry, experiments, discussion, or reading. The Teacher observes the process and guides the children. The teaching plan has a list of concepts to be learnt by the children.
The third step is about practice to strengthen understanding and skills through a range of engaging activities. Teachers can set up small projects or group work to reinforce conceptual understanding and attainment of competencies.
The fourth step is about applying the acquired understanding in the child’s everyday life. This can be accomplished through various activities and small projects.
The fifth step involves sharing the newly gained knowledge with friends by having talks, telling each other new stories, singing new songs, reading new books together and playing new games with each other. In our brain, a neural pathway is formed for every new subject we learn. Our learning is strengthened when we share knowledge. A neural pathway is incomplete if we don’t teach what we have learnt. Teaching makes learning clear and enduring.
